George Stroumboulopoulos's Greatest Hit
Still the best "George" moment.
The evidence suggests that he was offered the chance to be a judge on Canadian Idol
Thursday, October 18, 2007
Stroumboulopoulos: "... we're Canadian, we don't care about anything."
And Stroumboulopoulos will be celebrating the best of Canada's contribution to TV on Oct. 28 while hosting the Geminis in Regina, a city he thinks is the perfect setting for such a show.
"Doing a show like that in a town like that is way better than doing a show in Toronto or Vancouver, and I'm from Toronto. The problem with big cities, we're Canadian, we don't care about anything. It's like 'Oh, blah, blah, it's an award show, who cares?'" he explains. "You go to Regina? Party!"

Cool chicks who don't want anyone to know their real names
This is a very slick site, possibly created by the same group that did the defunct Hour Forum, and they can't stop thinking about George.

And yet even though they are always going to agree with George, and say how much they like him, they are still too embarrassed to reveal their true identities.
Can't say that I blame them.

Back To The Limo Service

From The Hour's blog ...
"George had an accident on his motorcycle last night. He says he was driving home, not going very fast and he pressed the brakes to slow down and something locked. He went over the handlebars. He says a homeless guy came over and stood up his motorcycle to help him on his way.
He broke his collarbone. He's in obvious pain. He's wearing a sling but not taking pain-killers so he can stay lucid for the show"
I never, ever want George to get hurt in any way, but I would like to see if The Hour would improve if he were on painkillers.

George Lets Paul Try His Pajamas

I love the picture.
And the tiny coffee cup next to George's mouse.
Oddly, this set up of G's is exactly as my own office was when I was half George's age.
Of course there were no computers then, and one picture was of a new album "Morrison Hotel" on my corkboard, along with a symbol for someone's idea for a new concept that was still months away - Greenpeace.
I see Paul Bates here more as the straw man in the Wizard of Oz, and George as the obvious Elvis wannabe.
Would the letter on the wall above the lamp be George's first draft of his attempt to get out of his contract with the CBC?
George appears to be looking for more lyrics to print at his Strombo.com.
The stuff on the bulletin board could, and should, just go into a scrapbook. And in fact the whole board could just be replaced with a yellow sticky that reads "DO A BETTER SHOW THAN YESTERDAY".
But if all that stuff helps George to remind himself that he's interesting, then who am I to spoil his "comfort zone".

OH, AND MEANWHILE:

From today's National Post ...
Ben Mulroney and George Stroumboulopoulos are the ying and the yang, possibly even the Salt N Peppa of Canadian television. And now, according to something that the latter let slip recently, it turns out George was actually supposed to be Ben!
While doing a guerilla-style online video interview with the Web site The Stroumboulopouli, the host of CBC's The Hour strongly insinuates that he turned down a job at Canadian Idol.
Musing on his career track, the so-called Strombo, who certainly doesn't have Ben's cufflink collection, had this to say: "I mean, I took that show in the States and it bombed, and it was an amazing experience, and I was offered a show that's a huge show here now and I turned it down. And people said to me 'that's the biggest show in Canadian history, why don't you do that show?' "
In a later interview with yet another Web site, insidethecbc. com, Strombo denied having been approached about Canadian Idol, though he didn't say what the aforementioned biggest show could be.

Did George Turn Down Canadian Idol?
AND CRANK UP THE VOLUME!
From The Teamakers:
"I mean I took that show in the States and it bombed, and it was an amazing experience, and I was offered a show that's a huge show here now and I turned it down.
And people said to me 'that's the biggest show in Canadian history, why don't you do that show?'
Because I wouldn't have felt right, you know?
And, you ...
But I don't regret it.
I think it was awesome.
Because of that I was able to get this show here."

ANYONE CAN DO IT
Even George
TO THE STROUMBOULOPOULI
I really enjoyed this a lot. It's actually quite an achievement in communication, and arising from the web like that. Homegrown journalism.
Serves a very useful purpose, and should be emulated more often.
Kudos to Stephanie in no small measure. And way to save the low budget quality by rubbing George's nose in that silly song at the end. Which of course was not your intention but that's how I prefer to view it.
The editing was pleasant, and some nice close-ups.
It played perfectly on my Mac.
I truly think this was good work, and in some ways superior to what George does.
The questions came from people, and not writers. And not from anyone who had an agenda to protect or beholding to anyone other than the subjects cooperation.
It was also a first attempt, so understandably a bit superficial and tentative. Far deeper and more serious questions could have been posed.
Too bad you can't find another dufus to interview.
But you are now officially members of a new breed of broadcasters, perhaps the first embodiment of the Strombo dictum, that if George can do it, anyone can.
